Hi Kraizeewhiz, Chinese New Year is just the new calendar year for the Chinese people. It is different from the Roman calendar which we all use all around the world today. The main thing is that it is a 15 day celebrations with the main theme of CNY is actually getting the family members from far and wide to be together and a time of healing too for families usually with great food, fellowship and catching up on times.
Hi Kraizewhiz, As for the animals, well, they are called the Chinese zodiac. Just like the Western ones like Taurus, Cancer and so on. It is a Chinese culture thingy which depicts a 12 year mathematical cycle in the Chinese calendar and they associate it with the zodiac involved. This year, 2012 is the Year of the Dragon; supposedly a good year of prosperity. If you ask me personally, I don't believe in it because I am a Christian but it is just a culture thing and I am still a Chinese. Hope that would enlighten you! Cheers, my friend!~
